During the opening monologue for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler spared no one -- not Tam Honks (aka Tom Hanks), not Andy Samberg and especially not Matt Damon, whom they referred to as a "garbageperson."
For those not closely following entertainment industry news, the comment seemed like gentle ribbing -- but some journalists are wondering whether the joke was a reference to the NYFCC awards dinner last week during which critic Armond White, or someone in his party, is rumored to have heckled "12 Years a Slave" director Steve McQueen, calling him a "garbage man."

Though White admitted to making some "sotto voce" comments, he denied that he ever said, "You’re an embarrassing doorman and garbage man. Fuck you. Kiss my ass,” as reported by the press.
The news sparked enough outrage that the NYFCC has called an emergency meeting to discuss White's fate as a member, but, as Anna Holmes points out, the entire reference is a little "inside baseball" for a national audience:

Damon went along with the joke, saying, "It's me, the garbage man," when he went up onstage minutes later.
